Collection: Miro Glavurtić
Miro Glavurtić is a painter and writer born in Kotor, Montenegro, in 1932. He graduated from the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade and began to paint and write at the time. He was a member and a theoretician of the art group Mediala.
Miro Glavurtić deals with problems of contemporary art both through literature and fine arts. His paintings represent surreal world surrounded with incertitude.
The displayed paintings are the most recent of his works. Most of them were created during his residence in Utrecht between 2013 and 2018.
Thematically they represent flashbacks of the past, the times of war in Yugoslavia and even before. Here are the families, nomads, mostly women with children - you see them from the back, or with faces covered, walking away from the misery of abandoned places, awaiting at the shore for the boat that would take them across the sea in the hope of finding a new refuge.
One can clearly recognise the influence of refugee movements in Europe that have triggered these memories of the past - paintings that sound as echoes of half-forgotten lives. One can also see religious motifs, some of them dark and almost colourless, some of them lightened by an angel's smile.
In each of his works, one can feel his expressiveness, suggestibility and strength, the consistency of his handwriting and the atmosphere of Medialistic principles.
