A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.
The foreground features dancers joyfully twirling, clapping tambourines, and moving to the rhythm, while a marching band, dressed in traditional hats, plays drums in the background. The sense of community and festivity is palpable as people of all ages participate, some holding umbrellas or watching with delight. A small dog even adds to the playful atmosphere. The detailed figures and sweeping composition capture the exuberance of the parade, celebrating unity and tradition.
