A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.
The scene is populated with figures, many wearing traditional attire, engaging in what seems to be a local festivity. Central to the composition is a group of dancers in expressive poses, some wearing masks, adding a playful and mysterious element to the image. The village backdrop, with its simple homes and community gathering, enhances the sense of unity and tradition. The use of soft shading and dynamic composition emphasizes the energy of the moment, capturing a timeless communal event.
