Description

A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The artwork presents riders on horseback, charging and clashing amidst a whirl of movement. The figures are both aggressive and desperate, with a dynamic energy portrayed in the raised weapons and galloping horses. Some soldiers have fallen, emphasizing the brutal reality of combat. The composition is filled with tension, with each character actively engaged in the struggle. The stylized figures and sweeping lines convey a sense of urgency and conflict, underscoring the themes of power, resistance, and survival.
