A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.
A large crowd, determined and energetic, marches forward, led by individuals holding poles or banners. The composition highlights the momentum of the masses, with figures in the foreground standing with purpose, while the distant marchers appear almost abstract, blending into the landscape. The shading and movement create a sense of urgency, unity, and strength. This piece emphasizes the themes of solidarity and collective struggle, conveying a strong message of determination and resilience.
